Central New York residents will need to dial 10 digits, even to call their neighbors.

As part of the North American Numbering Plan Administrator’s (NANPA) decision to assign a new 680 area code for Central New York, beginning Feb. 11, if you have a 315 area code, the new calling procedure will be required for all calls. On or after this date, if you don’t use the new calling procedure, your call won’t be completed and a recording will instruct you to hang up and dial again.
The new area code will be overlaid on the existing 315 calling area. All existing telephone users in the region will retain their entire current phone numbers, including the 315 area code. Once the new code is activated, new telephone numbers will be assigned to either the 315 or the new 680 area code. All calls to any number within the region will require 10-digit dialing regardless of the caller’s area code.
