"GREEN" MADISON CO. - Climate Smart Certification

Can't beat Zecca's Solid Waste Dept...always innovative...

Canastota, N.Y. >> There are 62 counties in New York, but only two of those counties has been honored by the New York State Department of Conservation as a Certified Climate Smart Community prior to December, 2016.

Buoyed by the efforts and plethora of new initiatives underway at the landfill, Madison County became the third county in the state to earn climate smart certification and just the 10th municipality across the state to earn such honors.

On Friday, members of the DEC and Miss Earth USA Corrin Stellakis, a Chittenango native, joined Madison County Department of Solid Waste Sanitation Director Jim Zecca and his staff at the landfill to commemorate the climate smart certification which recognizes the county for its many actions taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve climate resilience.

To achieve the certification, the county planning department led by Scott Ingmire, worked cooperatively with other departments to document the completion of various climate smart policies and projects.
